The Parable of the Skilled Physician and His Sick Children (Chapter 16 of the Lotus Sutra)

A physician was away from home when his children drank poison and was adversely affected by it. Upon his return, he quickly administers an antidote to them, but in their deluded state they reject it altogether. In order to cure them, he instructs his children to take the medicine and leaves for another land, and later sends a messenger to announce that he is dead. Filled with grief, the children finally take the medicine and are cured instantly. The physician heads back home shortly thereafter.
