Dengyo and the Tendai school in Japan
The founder of the Tendai (Tiantai) school in Japan, Saicho (also known as the Great teacher Dengyo) began his studies of Buddhism at Mount Hiei. There, he studied the three works of Tiantai that had been brought to Japan by Chinese monk. At the age of 39, Saicho travelled to Tang China. In 805, he returned to Japan with Zhanran’s (Miaole’s, Tiantai’s disciple) annotations to Tiantai’s three major works.
